Finding Inspiration
Martha's Vineyard

A Women's Writing Retreat on Martha's Vineyard

The pure sea air … the historic whaling towns … the views! Martha’s Vineyard’s stunning beauty serves as the backdrop for this immersive writing retreat.

This is your invitation to join me and a small group of like-minded women writers for a magical week on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. Together, we’ll explore the island, share our words, and grow as writers. You’ll return to the “mainland” with a refreshed writing practice, attainable goals, clear next steps, and a bucket load of inspiration.

October 6 -11, 2024

"I cannot speak highly enough about this retreat with Kathryn; she was the perfect guide in every way. Her writing exercises were inspiring and fun, not intimidating at all. The pacing of the workshop sessions, and the week in general, was well thought out and relaxing. I could not have asked for a more thoughtful, inspiring, and supportive guide to take me to the next level with my novel."
— Carrie Calderone, Orland Park, IL

In Martha’s Vineyard, you’ll have the space to…

There’s nothing like getting away from the stresses of daily life and giving your mind and body the time and space to truly relax. When all your needs are taken care of — from the stylish rooms at our boutique hotel to the delicious meals at local restaurants—there’s nothing for you to do except write. When you gift yourself the time and space to write, you’ll be amazed at how your creative spirit comes alive.

You’re coming to a magical island! When you aren’t writing, you’ll breathe the sea air as you walk the beach and explore the quaint laneways of Oak Bluffs. On our excursions together, we’ll explore the island’s historic towns, from Edgartown to Vineyard Haven, and immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of majestic cliffs and tranquil pastures. Closer to home, we’ll enjoy a private tour of the Methodist Campground (a National Historic Landmark) with its Gingerbread cottages and grand Tabernacle.

These are generative writing retreats, which means you’ll have the freedom to follow fresh ideas and deepen existing ones as you create new work. Each day, we’ll explore a new facet of your writing, including plot, character, dialogue, and more — all designed to help you discover and embrace your unique vision. You can look forward to morning (and some  afternoon) workshops, and shared dinners to keep the creative conversation going.

"I’m shy about meeting new people, but any reservations I had vanished in the first few minutes of our welcome session. Kathryn creates a very safe space in which to explore and share one’s creative process. She put together a fantastic group of women writers who were mutually supportive and generous. This is the second retreat of Kathryn’s that I’ve attended, and it was as uplifting as the first. Don’t delay. Sign up now for her next retreat!"

Upcoming Women’s Writing Retreats
in Martha’s Vineyard

October 6 -11, 2024

"My biggest fear in coming to this retreat was having to sit down and write “in the moment.” But Kathryn’s writing prompts are so inventive and inspiring that she had us all writing before we had time to think about it. I was able to refine my descriptions and develop my characters beyond what I thought I was capable of. The most important takeaway for me is that I now know I can write the family history I have in mind, and do it justice."
— Trish Bridier, Nantucket, MA

Learn more about Editing + Coaching

While writing retreats are a wonderful way to have an adventure as you focus on yourself as a creative, traveling across the world is not always in the cards. My coaching and editing services are available in person or virtually. The goal is to meet you where you are in your writing journey and help you formulate a path forward.

What other questions
can I answer?

Of course! We’ll be staying at Summercamp, a lighthearted, upscale boutique hotel on the harbor in Oak Bluffs. Our hotel is adjacent to the historic “Campground,” famous for it’s steel Tabernacle and Gingerbread cottages. SEE OUR HOTEL HERE →

Ah, imposter syndrome; it’s a sneaky monster. No matter where you are on your writing journey, we all wrestle with it. The women writers joining me on  Martha’s Vineyard for this retreat are at every stage of the writing journey, some with initial ideas and others with drafts in hand. But no matter where you are in your creative process, we’re all on the same page when it comes to supporting one another and fostering a safe and encouraging environment.

If you happen to have a draft in progress, by all means, bring it along, but it’s not required. I encourage everyone to remain open to the possibility of new ideas and to follow the creative flow in whatever direction it takes you. This retreat is generative, which means you’ll have many opportunities to explore new directions and create fresh work.

The retreat is intentionally designed to allow you time to rest (what a concept!). The day will be portioned out into writing time, workshops, free time, excursions, and meals together. We’ll enjoy a walking tour of Oak Bluffs and a comprehensive bus tour of  the island.

Yes, I give retreat participants the option to pay in several different ways. It’s important to me that all writers have access to these transformational retreats, so I recommend reaching out to learn more about payment options. Inquire HERE →

I’m excited too! I lived on the island of Nantucket for many years, and now that I live in Southern California, I look forward to a hit of island life every year. Working with writers and building relationships with fellow women writers inspires my own writing practice. The first step is to fill out the inquiry form, where you’ll book a Discovery Call with me so I can answer all your questions. Once you’ve confirmed your interest, I’ll send you the registration and payment information. Along the way, I’ll share more about what to expect on the retreat, and all the details about arrival times and transportation. In the meantime, start  dreaming of falling asleep to gentle ocean sound.

"I came to this writing retreat with an idea but didn’t know how to start. Clearly, I came to the right place! I’m leaving with clear, attainable goals for my project and a blueprint for a writing practice that will help me meet those goals. Kathryn creates a positive and safe environment that encourages exploration and experimentation. She is both personable and professional, and her caring attention to the logistical details of the retreat made each day a pleasure. Thank you."

The question is not if you have a writer within

The question is how can you set her free

I hope you’ll join me in Martha’s Vineyard and say YES to your writing life.
